Beach Books 2018

I want to pause time!

Last week, this thought kept fluttering through my mind. We spent the week at a North Carolina beach house with family we don’t get to spend time with all that often. We spent many hours being sandy, jumping waves, and eating as much shrimp as possible. As I get older, and my kids seem to daily gain inches on me in height, I battle this ever-present awareness of the diminishing number of our long summer days together.

In honor of my beloved silent sentinels that stand proud on nice wooden shelves, I journal the names of all books read. In 2017, 96 special books passed through my hands, heart, mind, and soul. The year championed Agatha Christie mysteries, returned to time and again for their ability to surprise, their championing of moral codes, their peek into English society of the 1940s-1960s, seen through the eyes of the dapper Hercule Poirot, the deceivingly complex Miss Marple. New York Times notables, blind dates arranged by friends, and a few strangers also made the cut.

2017 Five-star Books

Even though I’ve completed a big fat ZERO books in December, I exceeded my reading goal for the year and let me tell you the fun I just had looking back over all the books I read. Not only do I record each book I read, but I give each a star rating. I’m so tempted to go back and change the ratings I gave certain books!

But I’m letting it lay where it is. According to my nerdish records, these are my most highly rated, five-star books from 2017.
